NeighborWorks Alaska and its volunteers were painting away at a midtown home for Paint the Town. Even I picked up a brush and put a few layers of paint on it. Four houses have been painted so far this summer. This is all thanks to dozens of volunteers and several local sponsors.

Justin Penny is with Wells Fargo, who paired up with NeighborWorks Alaska to paint this home.

“We’re painting the house of a gentleman who is very giving in the community. And this is our way to give back to him.”

NeighborWorks has been doing this for nearly 30 years, helping folks feel proud of their homes. Jim McKenzie is with NeighborWorks Alaska.

“It’s a chance to get out in neighborhoods, help people who don’t have the resources to keep their home up to date, and help them,” he said.

For him, it’s always nice to see the community help out.

“We’re having some rough times, but I think this is just an example of what can happen when people do come together to help your neighbor and make your community look good.”

Danicia Shiryayev has volunteered for Paint the Town many times in the past and always enjoys it. She went on to say, “Getting to meet the homeowners is pretty special and just helping out our community members.”

This may be the last house of the summer, but you could still get involved in next year’s Paint the Town and nominate a home. For more information, you can find it here.
